DoorKing access control installation in West Palm Beach typically runs between $850 and $2,400, depending on whether you’re replacing a single failed part or building out a full keypad, card reader, and telephone entry setup. We stock DoorKing-compatible access control parts on our trucks, and most single-part swaps can be done the same day we arrive. The way owners usually find us is simple: the keypad stops reading codes, the card reader blinks but won’t release the gate, or the phone entry system picks up but won’t let anyone in. It’s rarely the whole system that fails. It’s almost always one part that quietly gave out.
We’re an independent gate specialist in West Palm Beach, not a DoorKing subsidiary. That matters because we’re free to tell you when a quality aftermarket part makes more sense than the OEM label, and when it doesn’t. More on that below.
Which DoorKing Models This Applies To
DoorKing has been building gate operators and access systems since 1948, and their model lines fall into a few clear families. The 1812 series covers light-duty residential swing gates. The 6000 and 6002 series are the slide gate operators. The 9000 series goes on commercial sliding gates. And the MicroCLIK and 8060/8061 boards run the brains behind the access control side: keypads, card readers, and telephone entry.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners learn the hard way in West Palm Beach: a DoorKing access control board from a 1812 will not talk to a newer MicroCLIK receiver without a conversion harness. The wiring colors look similar on the schematic, but the connector pitch changed across generations. If you’re looking at your part and the label says “1812-0XX” but your keypad is a 8040 or 8050 series, you likely need the bridge harness, not a new board. We keep those harnesses in the truck because we’ve made that mistake before and we don’t want to make it at your house.
The OEM-versus-aftermarket decision on DoorKing parts is worth being honest about. For boards and receivers, we recommend OEM. DoorKing’s circuit protection tolerances are specific enough that a generic aftermarket board can cause intermittent faults, especially in South Florida humidity. For keypads and card readers, a quality aftermarket unit like the ones from linear-compatible manufacturers works fine and often costs 30 to 40 percent less. We’ll show you both prices in writing before we touch anything, and you pick.

Signs Your DoorKing Access Control Installation Is Failing
- Keypad accepts some codes but not others. This is almost always a worn membrane on the 8040 or 8050 keypad, not a programming issue. The contacts under the most-used buttons lose conductivity first, usually the first digit of every code.
- Card reader flashes green but the gate doesn’t move. The reader is reading. The relay output that tells the operator to open is dead. We see this on DoorKing 6050 card readers that have been exposed to direct afternoon sun in West Palm Beach for five or more years.
- Telephone entry system rings but won’t buzz the gate open. The DTMF decoder on the 8060 board stops hearing the “9” tone first. It’s a replaceable chip, not a full board swap, and it’s about a $180 part rather than a $700 board.
- Gate opens on its own at random intervals. This is the classic symptom of a failing safety loop detector or a ground fault feeding back through the access control relay. In older West Palm Beach neighborhoods, we also check for gecko damage inside the enclosure – they love the warmth and they short terminals.
- System works during the day, dead at night. This points to a failing power supply or battery backup in the DoorKing 8060 cabinet. The heat load during a Florida afternoon pushes a weakening capacitor past its limit. Cool it down at night and it limps along until it doesn’t.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what we quote for DoorKing access control installation in West Palm Beach, parts and labor included:
- Single keypad replacement (8040/8050 series): $350 to $550 installed
- Card reader replacement (6050 series): $380 to $620 installed
- Access control board replacement (8060/8061): $650 to $950 installed
- Full keypad plus board plus telephone entry retrofit: $1,400 to $2,400 installed
- Diagnostic visit (applied toward repair): $89
The spread comes down to which DoorKing generation you have, whether your enclosure needs re-sealing against Florida humidity, and how far your operator sits from the gate itself. The price you see on paper is the price you pay. If we open the cabinet and find a corroded terminal block that wasn’t visible from outside, we stop, show you, and get your okay in writing before we add a dollar. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise backs every DoorKing access control installation. If it isn’t right within a year, we make it right. No fine print. No argument.

DoorKing access control runs on 24-volt DC, which is not a lethal voltage on its own. But inside that cabinet you’re working next to 120-volt AC feeds for the operator, and the capacitors in a DoorKing power supply can hold a charge long after you cut the breaker. If you’re comfortable with a multimeter and you want to check one thing yourself, start with the keypad: power it down, open the faceplate, and look for corroded terminals or a swollen capacitor. If you see either, you’ve found the problem, and it’s a part swap you can leave to us.
What we’d rather you not do is start jumping relays on an 8060 board to “test” it. A missed jumper on that board can send 120 volts into the 24-volt rail and fry the keypad, the reader, and the board in one move. We’ve worked on DoorKing systems all over West Palm Beach, and the most expensive repair calls are the ones where a well-meaning owner tried to save $89 on a diagnostic visit. Call Cody and the team at (728) 203-0817 and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s a five-minute fix or a full replacement. “Tell me what it’s doing and what it stopped doing – that’s usually enough to get started.”
FAQs
A properly installed DoorKing access control system lasts 8 to 12 years in South Florida before the boards or keypads need replacement. The salt air and humidity in West Palm Beach shorten keypad membrane life to about 5 to 6 years, so expect a keypad replacement once or twice over the life of the system. Call us at (728) 203-0817 and we’ll tell you what your system’s age means for the parts still on it.
Sometimes. We regularly repair DoorKing 8060 boards by replacing individual relays, capacitors, and DTMF decoder chips for $120 to $220, which is far less than a $700 board replacement. If the board has multiple failed components or visible burn marks, we’ll tell you replacement is the smarter money and show you the numbers for both options. Call (728) 203-0817 for an honest read on what’s fixable.
A single keypad or card reader swap takes 45 to 90 minutes once we’re on site. A full board replacement runs 2 to 3 hours including programming and testing. If your system needs a full retrofit with new keypad, board, and enclosure sealing, plan for a half day. We’ll give you a written time estimate before we start.
We stock DoorKing 8040 and 8050 keypads, 6050 card readers, MicroCLIK receivers, and common 8060 board components on the truck. Most single-part replacements in West Palm Beach are done same-day. If your model needs a part we don’t carry, we source it from our local distributor and it’s typically in hand within one to two business days.
